Chronoscope 4: Remigiusplatz - Parish Church of St. Remigius

The parish church of St. Remigius stood here until 1800, where Ludwig's grandparents were married in 1733 and his parents in 1767. Like most of his siblings, Ludwig was baptized here and his great-grandparents were buried here in 1749.

Entry for Ludwig van Beethoven dated December 17, 1770 in the baptismal register of the former parish church of St. Remigius on today's Remigiusplatz.

His father Johann taught the organist. Bartholomäus Fischenich, the sexton's son, was later Beethoven's friend.

The entry in the baptismal register lists Ludwig van Beethoven's parents as well as his godparents: his grandfather, court conductor Ludwig van Beethoven, and his neighbor Anna Gertrud Baum.

A lightning strike destroyed the old parish church. It was not rebuilt. The pulpit was moved to Bonn Minster, the bell to today's Namen-Jesu-Kirche in Bonngasse and the baptismal font to the former Minorite Church in Brüdergasse, which was renamed Remigiuskiche in 1806 (Station 2).
