Testimonies for posterity

In his letter to Joseph von Schaden in Augsburg on September 15, 1787, Beethoven expressed his grief over his mother's death.

His mother's death in 1787 was a heavy blow for Beethoven: "She was such a good, kind mother to me, my best friend; oh! Who was happier than I, since I could still pronounce the sweet name of mother, and it was heard". A grave of honor was dedicated to her in 1932. Her father's grave is not known.

Beethoven's violin teacher Franz Anton Ries, his publisher Nikolaus Simrock and his friend Bartholomäus Fischenich also rest here. In 1793, the latter wrote to Friedrich Schiller's wife Charlotte, who is also buried there, that Beethoven would also work on every verse of Schiller's ode "An die Freude". "I expect something perfect, because as far as I know him, he is all for the great and sublime."

A magnificent gravestone shows where the great Beethoven admirers Robert Schumann and his wife Clara, honorary member of the Beethoven-Haus Association, are buried.
