Stele 2: Remigius Church

During Beethoven's years in Bonn, this 13th century church was a lively center for the monks of the Franciscan Minorite order. It was here that Beethoven received lessons on the organ, on which he often played at the early mass at the age of ten.

The organ bench and organ console from the Remigiuskirche are now in the Beethoven-Haus (Station 1).

His most important teachers were the court organists Gilles van den Eeden and Christian Gottlob Neefe. Beethoven also played the organ in other churches. On July 1, 1784, he became deputy court organist with service in the Schlosskirche (Station 5).

In 1800, the original Remigiuskirche, Beethoven's baptismal church (Station 4), burned down. After the dissolution of the Minorite monastery in 1803 in the course of secularization, this church was renamed Remigiuskirche in 1806. Beethoven's baptismal font was brought here at that time.
