Stele 11: Draitsch spring

Beethoven once went from the Draitschquelle to play the organ at the Marienforst monastery near Bonn.

Around 1790, Godesberg was a small village near the royal seat of Bonn. The mineral-rich Draitsch spring, which was initially only used by the local population, was certified as having a special quality in that year. Under Elector Max Franz, this led to the development of Godesberg into a spa town with parks, a fountain house and spa facilities as well as the Redoute (Station 10).

Ludwig van Beethoven once met with friends here to play the organ at the nearby Birgitten monastery in Marienforst. He varied a theme and "common workmen who were cleaning the church downstairs, which had been soiled by the building work, were vividly affected by it, laid down their tools before and after, and listened with amazement and obvious pleasure". This is how a childhood friend of Beethoven's described it.
