The Beethoven monument was inaugurated on August 12, 1845 with the support of Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt.

Dedicated to posterity

The initiative for the Beethoven monument came from Heinrich Carl Breidenstein, the first professor of musicology in the German-speaking world. In 1835, citizens founded the "Bonn Association for Beethoven's Monument".

The important composer Robert Schumann spread the appeal for donations throughout Europe. Ten years later, Franz Liszt contributed the missing funds. He also ensured that a large wooden concert hall was built in just ten days and that the first Beethoven Festival was held there in 1845.

After the festive service in the Romanesque cathedral, the unveiling of the monument took place. It was attended by Queen Victoria of England, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, intellectual greats such as Alexander von Humboldt and important musicians from all over Europe.

The young Beethoven had played the organ in the cathedral and probably also attended elementary school there.
