Beethoven tour

Stele 16: Meckenheim

In 1781, Beethoven's father Johann took his son on a traveling tour, during which they also stopped off in Meckenheim.

For music lovers

Reconstructive postcard view of Meckenheim.

Ludwig van Beethoven spent his youth not only in the electoral seat of Bonn. Like many court musicians, the Beethoven family - grandfather Ludwig was court conductor, father Johann a singer in the court chapel - cultivated contacts with acquaintances in the surrounding area who were devoted to music. Many of them also came to Bonn to marvel at the musical talent of the growing Ludwig.

In 1781, Johann van Beethoven and his son Ludwig undertook a traveling tour accompanied by their relative, the violinist Franz Georg Rovantini. They stopped off at Carl Joseph Rheindorf's house in Ersdorf, today a district of the town of Meckenheim.

In Ahrweiler, they were guests of the Schopp brothers. In Röttgen, they visited the forester Franz Stephan Ostler, "whose son was also a music lover", as the Bonn master baker Fischer reported.
