Chronoscope 10: Encounter with Haydn

Elector Max Franz had the Redoute built in 1790-1792 as a ballroom and concert hall in Godesberg, a "place of pleasure near Bonn", as it was called at the time. Beethoven's violin teacher Franz Anton Ries later lived in one of the adjoining lodging houses.

Joseph Haydn had stopped off in the royal seat at Christmas 1790 on his trip to England with Johann Peter Salomon, a concert entrepreneur from Bonn. On his return journey in July 1792, he met the 21-year-old Ludwig van Beethoven here.

The musicians of the court orchestra served the guest a breakfast in Godesberg. Beethoven presented his own works to the composer, who was celebrated throughout Europe. In November 1792, he then set off for Vienna for lessons with Haydn, from whom he was to receive "Mozart's spirit", as Count Ferdinand von Waldstein told Beethoven.
