Stele 17: Chapel Holzem/Wachtberg

The tenor Anton Raaff, a colleague of Beethoven's grandfather, donated the Holzem chapel, which was founded in 1744.

A great tenor

Anton Raaff (1714-1797), one of the most famous tenors of the 18th century, painting by Clemens August Philippart.

It was not only the electoral court orchestra of the small city of Bonn that was of a high musical standard at the end of the 18th century. Many places in the region also cultivated chamber music, which was a central social element at the time.

Anton Raaff, born in Gelsdorf in 1714, grew up in Holzem. Elector Clemens August recognized his talent early on and employed him as a court musician in 1736. In the court orchestra, he was a colleague of Ludwig van Beethoven's grandfather, who was also called Ludwig and was a bass at the time.

Raaff had already experienced regular chamber concert evenings on his parents' estate as a child. He later became a highly successful tenor throughout Europe. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the title role of the opera Idomeneo for him. The St. Nepomuk Chapel in Holzem, built in 1744, was donated by Raaff.
