Beethoven tour

Stele 19: Hennef

During their journey in 1781, Beethoven and his father met music lovers in Hennef, presumably country magistrate Franz Josef von Proff.

Musical network

Franz Joseph Freiherr von Proff (1746-1799) was the supreme court ruler for almost the entire area on the right bank of the Rhine in today's Rhein-Sieg district from 1766.

Ludwig van Beethoven's father Johann was a tenor in the Bonn court orchestra. When the Elector was absent, the musicians were free unless they accompanied him.

In 1781, Johann van Beethoven took the opportunity to visit music lovers in the region with his son and their related violin teacher Franz Georg Rovantini. In Hennef, they met with "Musick Freünden". Presumably this was in the Proffenhof across the road at the home of country judge Franz Josef von Proff.

In Bensberg, where they were "well received", they visited the lord of the castle Karl Josef

Mourraux. This can be seen in the memoirs of Bonn master baker Gottfried Fischer. The organist Antweiler, one of Beethoven's contemporaries, reports frequent visits to Unkel. The young Ludwig then played music in the home of Antweiler's father, who was also an organist.
