Father Rhine
Ludwig van Beethoven wrote to his Bonn friend Franz Gerhard Wegeler from Vienna in 1801: "My fatherland, the beautiful region in which I saw the light of day, is still as beautiful and clear before my eyes as when I left you. In short, I will regard this time as one of the happiest events of my life, when I can see you again and greet the Father Rhine."
The Rhine took Beethoven to Cologne for his first public concert in 1778. In 1783, the twelve-year-old traveled as far as Rotterdam. In 1791, the court orchestra's journey up the Rhine to Mergentheim began here.
During the "millennium flood" of 1784, the Beethovens had to leave their home in Rheingasse with the Fischer family, where grandfather Ludwig had already lived in 1733. The master baker Gottfried Fischer kept important records of Beethoven's time in Bonn.
