Destination of longing
Beethoven was already inspired by nature during his time in Bonn. He took a boat to the right bank of the Rhine to "dream and work there." The French composer Hector Berlioz noted in 1845: "Beethoven did indeed have a great love of the countryside; this feeling had a great influence on his style."
It is "sometimes noticeable even in compositions by him that have no rural tendencies whatsoever". In other works, such as the "Pastoral Symphony" composed later in Vienna, the reference is obvious. Beethoven's manuscript is now in the Beethoven House (Station 1).
The expansive views from the Drachenfels will also have touched Beethoven. During his time in Vienna, he often recalled the Rhine landscapes, "which I so long to see again, since I left them in my youth".
